Texas Travesty Film Festival

Poster. Its really not our place to tell anyone to do anything. We post suggestions of things you could do, but you certainly don’t have to do them. But this time we’re telling you: Go to the Texas Travesty Film Festival tomorrow at 9pm at the Texas Union Theater. In fact, get there early (8pm) for “4-20 treats” and a Karaoke competition. Chances are you will thank us, because you are guaranteed to laugh at this thing. Just show up at the Union Theater tomorrow and you’ll see what we mean.

Cine Las Americas 8. Esta semana!

Poster. We just spent an ungodly amount of time writing a post about the 8th annual Cine Las Americas Film Festival. It was informative, hilarious, serious, everything a post should be. Unfortunately an ill-timed browser crash wiped the unsaved post clean, deleting it’s ingenious content from our hard drive forever. So with much sadness we buckled down and began a new post (this post). A less tenacious blog would have given up altogether, but as much as we would like to take credit for this persistence we must admit that it actually is due to the sheer awesomeness of Cine Las Americas Film Festival. We would write thousands more posts on it too (although they would get progressively shorter) because we think you need to know about it.
Cine Las Americas Film Festival showcases some of the top-quality films made by Natives and Latinos across the American continent. Over seven years it has become one of the largest Latin American film festivals in the nation. Year eight is no exception; they’ve packed a shitload of great films into a five-day period. Opening night kicks off this Wednesday, April 20 at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum starting at 7pm. The films continue until the following Sunday. Keep in mind its still not too late to purchase an all-access pass for only $60.
You should also keep in mind that the free (and excellent) Cine Las Americas panels and screenings at the University of Texas (which started today) will continue tomorrow with three more great discussions, so its not too late for that either. Check below for more info. Now if we can only post this without it crashing…

Ingmar Bergman Retrospective

Ingmar Bergman does his thing. If you havn’t attended any screenings of the excellent Martin Scorsese film series at the beautiful (almost sexual) Paramount Theatre then it may upset you to learn that it is nearly over. It’s not too late to catch Raging Bull or Goodfellas though, with screenings on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. And we know those are the only ones you wanted to see anyway.

If you thought the Scorsese retrospective was cool, you may be pumped about the Paramount’s upcoming Bergman retrospective in May; Ten of the director’s best films screened under the roof of one of the best places in the world to take in a movie. Seven of these films are brand new 35mm prints. You gotta love the Paramount. Check out their website for a schedule.
