Dave Attell’s Insomniac Tour

Headshot.Remember that Insomniac episode in Austin? Yeah we thought it was pretty frightening also, but at least we fared better than some of the other cities comedian Dave Attell visited. Anyway, if you think Attell is funny then you’re in for a treat, because his Insomniac tour (you know, the commercials on Comedy Central where he’s riding around in a ridiculous bus) is on its way to the Austin Music Hall. Dave will be whippin it out on Friday, May 13; doors at 8 show at 9. So get your tickets soon.

Early Voting

Early voting began yesterday and will continue on until Tuesday, May 3. Voting in city elections isn’t as humdrum as you probably think it is. It’s a great group activity for instance, go out to the polling place with the guys, vote, exchange high fives, go get some beers, discuss the ramifications of the ACC annexation proposal. It’s also a great place to bring a date to let him/her know how politically conscious you are: you even vote in city elections! And if you don’t have a date, did we mention that polling places are rife with attractive singles? And you’ll always have a conversation starter, try these:

“Those ballots are so confusing aren’t they?”
“Did I see you here last election?”
“You are turning me on sooooo much right now.”
and the time honored, “Who did you vote for.”

But while you’re at the polling place don’t forget to vote, you usually get a sticker. Don’t know where to go or who to vote for? Here’s some helpful links:

Killfloor Goes Mobile

Tired of spending most of your day in situations where you can’t read Killfloor? Were you ever taking a crap and all of the sudden had an overwhelming urge to find out what the hell to do Saturday night? Your day has finally come, for Killfloor is now available on your mobile phone or PDA. Amazing! You can read all the latest entries by date or by category, and there’s even a nifty feature where you can submit a field report to tell others about a bitchin’ party you’re at or your band’s show (please do not submit a field report about how big your penis is). If the field report thing works out we’ll add a feature to the site where you can view what people send in.
To access this awesomeness just type “http://winksite.com/killfloor/mobile” into your phone or PDA’s web browser, and be sure to bookmark it so you can get back easily.

KVRX Prom 2005

Carrie. We just about flipped our shit when we heard that KVRX was going to be throwing a Prom. This is what high-school Prom should have been like. Great music, spiked punch, a professional photographer, special-guest chaperones, and baby blue tuxedos. But the administration always saw to it that none of the above ever went down, so thank you KVRX for making our dreams come true. The Prom is Saturday, May 7 (right after class ends) at Iron Gate Studios at 8pm. Austin’s own self-descriptive dance band Clap! Clap! will be providing tunes, and it will only cost you $5. Better start booking your limo and hotel rooms.

Cine Las Americas 8. Esta semana!

Poster. We just spent an ungodly amount of time writing a post about the 8th annual Cine Las Americas Film Festival. It was informative, hilarious, serious, everything a post should be. Unfortunately an ill-timed browser crash wiped the unsaved post clean, deleting it’s ingenious content from our hard drive forever. So with much sadness we buckled down and began a new post (this post). A less tenacious blog would have given up altogether, but as much as we would like to take credit for this persistence we must admit that it actually is due to the sheer awesomeness of Cine Las Americas Film Festival. We would write thousands more posts on it too (although they would get progressively shorter) because we think you need to know about it.
Cine Las Americas Film Festival showcases some of the top-quality films made by Natives and Latinos across the American continent. Over seven years it has become one of the largest Latin American film festivals in the nation. Year eight is no exception; they’ve packed a shitload of great films into a five-day period. Opening night kicks off this Wednesday, April 20 at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum starting at 7pm. The films continue until the following Sunday. Keep in mind its still not too late to purchase an all-access pass for only $60.
You should also keep in mind that the free (and excellent) Cine Las Americas panels and screenings at the University of Texas (which started today) will continue tomorrow with three more great discussions, so its not too late for that either. Check below for more info. Now if we can only post this without it crashing…

University of Texas Fashion Show

Austin’s not much of a high-end fashion town; Nordstrom in Barton Creek Mall is probably as good as it gets here. As far as viewing a fashion show, that’s right out. A fashion show in Austin just doesn’t happen (unless all of the clothes are made of hemp or something). But we’ve got news; it does happen. At least it will happen this Friday, April 22 at the Frank Erwin Center as UT students from the Department of Human Ecology’s Division of Textiles and Apparel (we guess that means fashion) show off some pretty clothes. The doors will open for an exhibition at 5pm with the fashion show starting at 8. Is this the beginning of an Austin fashion scene? Probably not, although we could use more supermodels.

More on the Smoking Ban

Time to quit. After posting our novel-length guide to the upcoming city elections (link below). We’ve overheard many a heated discussion at various coffee shops concerning the Anti-Smoking Referendum. And since the next best thing to overhearing discussions at coffee shops is reading blogs, we’d thought it be a good idea to send you over to ill-sorted ephemera, where much more time and thought has been put into the matter. There’s a good selection of articles concerning the issue, for and against. And you don’t even have to go to a coffee shop.

Art Cars On Parade

C'art. They say you are what you drive. So I guess if you’re car is an El Dorado decorated to look like a giant goat then… well, you might have trouble picking up dates. Not this weekend though, because the third annual Art Car Parade is (literally) rolling in to town. So if you’ve been seeing some pretty abnormal automobiles this is the likely explaination (although it could be one of those rogue art cars). If you haven’t guessed, the Art Car Parade involves a procession of painstakenly decorated cars down Congress Ave., starting at the capitol and eventually ending in the Congress Ave. Baptist Church parking lot on South Congress, where a so-called “car-nival” takes place. The parade takes place this Saturday, April 16 at 11:30am, with that kooky “car-nival” going from 1:30-4:30pm. We can honestly say that the art on display is quite “moving”. (Sorry.)
